1990年9月22日,世人瞩目的第11届亚运会在北京隆重开幕。9月23日,法国发行量最大的体育报《队报》出版的《队报画刊》“中国专辑”的两位记者撰文指出:北京通过这届亚运会,向世界体坛显示了中国能够举办大型运动会,中国有能力在2000年举办奥林匹克运动会。国际奥林匹克委员会主席萨马兰奇在亚运会期间,无论是和中国领导人谈话,还是在公众面前发言,都希望中国抓住亚运会胜利的契机,向全世界展现自己的能力和体育热情,将眼光转向2000年奥运会。北京市常务副市长张百发在10月7日亚运会闭幕式前,向最后一位捐款者——85岁高龄的中国网球协会主席吕正操表示,积极准备将来举办奥运会。吕老高兴地说:再过10年,我还要来参加奥运会的开、闭幕式。本刊在这里介绍的亚运工程筹建始末仅仅从一个侧面说明:北京的体育设施已达到奥林匹克标准,中国的首都可以信心十足地提出主办奥林匹克运动会的要求。
