Objective To understand the status of nutritional anemia in infants and young children in rural poverty-stricken areas in Hunan Province, and to provide evidence for the comprehensive prevention and control measures of infant anemia in impoverished rural areas. Methods The methods of probabilistic scale sampling (PPS) and systematic sampling were used to investigate the infants’ family history of infants and young children aged 6-24 months from 2012 to 2015 in poverty-stricken areas in Hunan Province. The hemoglobin content, body weight and body length were measured. Results The prevalence of total anemia in 14 082 infants and young children aged 6-24 months was 32.7%. The prevalence rates of anemia in infants and children aged 6-24 months from 2012 to 2015 were 39.6%, 31.4%, 36.4% and 30.8%, respectively. Over time The progression gradually declined (P <0.05). The prevalence of anemia in boys was higher than that in girls (P <0.05). The prevalence of anemia at 6 ~, 12 ~, 18 ~ 24 months old was 42.7%, 33.6%, 24.5% respectively. The prevalence decreased gradually with age (P <0.05). The prevalence of anemia in low birth weight infants and young children was higher than that in non-low birth weight infants. The prevalence of anemia in infants with low body mass index was higher than that of infants with non-low body mass index (P <0.05) The prevalence of anemia in infants and young children with adolescent growth retardation was higher than that in infants with non-growth retardation, but the difference was not statistically significant (P> 0.05). The level of father’s education had no effect on the prevalence of anemia in infants and young children (P> 0.05). The prevalence of anemia in mothers with high education level was lower than that of mothers with low education level (P <0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of anemia in infants and young children aged 6 ~ 24 months in rural poverty-stricken areas of Hunan Province is relatively high. It is necessary to take comprehensive measures to improve the nutritional status of infants and young children and reduce the prevalence of anemia in infants and young children.
