习语(idiom)是各国人民在语言使用中提炼形成的固定短语或语句。它包括成语、典故、谚语、格言、俗语、俚语、方言等,具有结构严谨、含义精辟、形象鲜明等特点。英语和汉语都拥有大量的习语。翻译是一种跨文化、跨语际的双重交际活动,译者是其中心,是源语文化和译语文化信息传递的协调人(mediator)。在翻译英汉习语的过程中,译者既要忠实于原文,保持源语习语的生动形象、丰富联想的修辞效果,还要符合译入语的要求,做到流利、地道。一般来说,习语的翻译可以采取下列几种方法:
