清代于对王爵者,向有宗室与外藩之分。宗室亲王、郡王皆赐有封号,如咸丰帝封其六弟奕訢为恭亲王、七弟奕譞为醇郡王。“恭”、“醇”二字,在称谓中一概沿用。如称奕訢为恭亲王、恭王、恭邸、恭王爷。至外藩亲王、郡王皆无封号之说,官方称谓均以其领地之名冠于王号之前,世俗则以其本名之第一字相称。如清末的蒙古科尔沁部亲王僧格林沁,官称科尔沁亲王,俗称僧王、僧邸、僧王爷。
