1492年10月12日,航海家哥伦布踏上了美洲的土地,完成了人类历史上具有划时代意义的伟大壮举,打破了世界各大陆间的隔绝状态,给人类历史的发展带来了深远的影响。新航路的开辟,不仅在欧洲和美洲引起了巨大的社会变革,而且也使新旧大陆的物产得以交流和传播,尤其是新大陆的玉米、马铃薯、番茄、花生、橡胶、可可以及烟草等种植作物传入旧大陆,对欧洲乃至整个人类的物质生活产生了多方面的影响。
