澳大利亚从五十年代初就广泛搜集和研究西番莲的种质资源.据报道:迄今为止,生产上所采用的种,其染色体数全是2n=18.商品生产的紫果西番莲(Passiflora edu-lis)易遭土壤中的尖镰抱菌(Fusariumoxysporum)为害而枯死.澳大利亚用当地原产的橙黄西番莲(P.aurantia)草绿西番莲(P. herbertina)和朱红西番莲(P.cinabarina)做为砧木进行嫁接,企图解决病害问题.这3个种都是二倍体,2n=12.其中前两个种抗尖镰抱菌.但具匍匐生长习性,不适于做砧木用.朱红西番莲抗寒力很强.
