NO
It is generally believed that acute and chronic neurological diseases are associated with the death of nerve cells stimulated by excitatory amino acids (EAAs) and antagonism of EAAs receptors against nerve damage. Glutamic acid and aspartic acid are two major EAAs. Currently, the drugs used to treat nerve damage are generally N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists. Free radicals and nitric oxide (NO) can damage many cell tissues, and they have recently been found to be involved in the death of nerve cells. NO is a messenger molecule in blood vessels and has a similar role in the brain. It is synthesized by L-arginine by its synthase and is produced in response to NMDA receptor stimulation. NO
