鸦片战争开端是一个颇有争议的问题。目前史学界主要有两种观点,一是“1839年9月九龙之战为鸦片战争开端”说,另一种是“1840年6月,英军来华入侵广东是鸦片战争开端”说。笔者以为把开端界定于九龙之战和进入广东海面、封锁珠江口都有值得商榷的地方,本文从鸦片战争的实际进程、英军侵华战略目标以及定海之战的性质及影响等方面谈些看法,认为1840年7月5日英军进攻浙江定海是鸦片战争正式爆发的标志,是鸦片战争的开端。
