This article is an excerpt from the speech made by the famous American architect Les E. Robertson in 1987 at the 20th World Steel Association’s annual meeting. A brief overview of the development status of high-rise building steel structures was introduced. Several representative examples of the world’s tallest building structure technology were introduced and the role of steel structures in high-rise buildings was described. Many of these ideas, viewpoints and treatment methods are very novel and practical. This is a good reference for the rational and economic development of high-rise building steel structures in China. LE Robertson designed the 110th-floor World Trade Center Tower in New York, which is currently the second largest in the world. In 1970, he developed the core-tube space framework system. Recently, he collaborated with world-famous Bermuming Architects and successfully designed it according to Baine’s vision. At present, the Hong Kong Bank of China Tower, the tallest building in Asia, has launched a prismatic hollow giant truss system. The building has a beautiful structure, is tall and straight, and economic. It shows great achievements. The Wente was translated by Gu Weizu, a senior engineer of Shanghai Metallurgical Design Institute. This edition was partially revised and deleted, and chapters were added. editor
