竞走运动员在我国起步较晚,开展的还不是很普及。近年来,我国女子竞走运动虽然已达到了世界先进水平,男子项目也进入了国际先进行列,但在我国实际竞走的人并不多。国内一批优秀竞走运动员大部分是从中长跑运动员过度而来的。为了适应世界高、精、尖运动技术发展形势的需要,发挥我国竞走项目的优势,除了加强竞走运动的普及工作之外,必须加强竞走运动员早起选材和培养。
