In order to study male and female reproductive toxicity of inorganic mercury, male workers in occupational exposure to metal-mercury were investigated for reproductive function and the effects of mercury on the gonads of male animals were studied through animal experiments. The results showed that the occupational mercury exposure was significantly higher in the male workers than in the control group (P <0.01). The incidence of threatened abortion was significantly higher in the mercury male workers than in the control group (P <0.05). It was found to have a significant effect on pregnancy outcome; no evidence of adverse effects of current available mercury levels on offspring was observed. Mercury on the male gonads obvious damage. Pathological examination showed that the epithelium of the focal seminiferous tubules in the testis of the exposed rats were disordered, the cells were shed and the mature spermatozoa were reduced. Electron microscopy showed that the number of lipid granules in the cytoplasm increased in the sperm cells in the high dose group, indicating that the sperm degenerated change. Therefore, the role of mercury in male (male) sexual reproduction should be further studied.
