The objective of snowmelt runoff studies between Canada and the United States is to evaluate the usefulness of making regional snow cover maps using passive microwave data. On-board gamma ray and ground snow measurements provide a “ground truth” of snow equivalent for improvements in airborne and satellite passive microwave measurement systems. The airborne measurement system is suitable for dry snow. The statistical analysis of the vertical polarization temperature of 37GHz can achieve the best estimate of snow water equivalent. Airborne measurement systems were validated using SMMR data for areas without trees, and the distribution of snow equivalent was in good agreement with gamma-ray and ground-based measurements to clearly identify wet snow but no snow Water equivalent (SWE) value. Research shows that for remote snow cover analysis, passive remote sensing data are useful.
