王先谦的《日本源流考》,是我国首部编年体日本通史。王先谦从戊戌维新时期开始编纂此书,到1901年全书22卷告成。《日本源流考》在对日本史的编纂以及研究上具有独到之处,该书不仅征引史料范围广泛,而且运用传统史学的考异方法,审慎考证史实,以保证学术质量。《日本源流考》不仅体现出王先谦贯通古今的史学思想,还蕴含了求实致用的治学态度,对清末时期人们了解和认识日本起了重要作用,同时在中国的日本研究史上也具有重要价值。
