空中客车工业公司估计,未来20年内将需要800余架600座以上的大型民用运输机,如果不能提供这一座级的飞机,那么,从理论上讲,低于这一座级的飞机的交付量将增加50%.然而,目前世界上已有许多地区的飞机飞行频率已相当高,机场已经饱和,而总的客座需求还可能得不到满足,至少未来20年的后期是这样.因此,波音和空中客车工业公司都在进行超大型民用运输机的研究.航空公司要求,这一座级的飞机至少应比波音747的航程远,且可在与其相同的机场条件(包括环境条例规定)下起降,其每座的营运成本要大大降低.这就要求这一座级的飞机在技术上要向前迈进一大步.
