Objective To understand the level of awareness of secondary infectious diseases in secondary vocational schools and to analyze the differences between the two. Methods The randomized cluster sampling was used in this survey. Of the girls attending a secondary vocational school nursing department in Wuhu, 337 students were selected as the survey sample. Results The percentage of female students who knew about schistosomiasis was 47.5% and their knowledge of AIDS was 62.0%. Comparing the level of knowledge of two kinds of infectious diseases among girls and understanding of AIDS better than schistosomiasis, the difference was statistically significant (X ~ 2 = 14.38, P <0.001). Positive attitude toward schistosomiasis accounted for 72.1%, positive attitude toward AIDS accounted for 61.4%. Comparing the attitudes and behaviors of female students on these two infectious diseases, the cognition of schistosomiasis is more positive, the difference was statistically significant (X ~ 2 = 8.67, P = 0.003). Conclusions Female students have less understanding of schistosomiasis and AIDS than the target. In order to avoid prejudice, discrimination and misconduct of secondary school girls due to the lack of knowledge, the following points need to be strengthened: one is social concern; the other is to strengthen school health education; the third is to encourage effective family intervention.
