CD45 is a membrane glycoprotein with phosphotyrosine phosphatase activity. It is one of the major components of tyrosine phosphatase activity in lymphocytes. Its function may be through the activation of tyrosine kinases that direct membrane signaling. Our study of a plasmacytoma cell line J558 1 μm 3 that did not express CD45 expressing only transfected mIgM antigen receptors found that activation of this cell did not induce intracytoplasmic Ca 2+ increases. The authors further demonstrated that expression of the CD45 molecule is directly related to cellular activation using the J558 l [mu] m <3> fragment transfected with cDNA of CD45.
