夏志清先生晚年唯一的一次来中国大陆,是在一九八三年春夏之交,他应钱锺书先生的邀请,走访了中国社会科学院,回头来到上海,访问复旦大学。好像那一次并非是复旦大学主动邀请的,而是因为他的一个亲戚,是复旦大学中文系的王继权先生,他看望亲戚顺道访问复旦大学。那个时候夏先生的《中国现代小说史》在台湾出版中文版没几年,大陆学术界有许多左派人士正在愤怒声讨、竭力抵制,官方很难善意地接待这位被认为是“反共”的学者。我不知道他在北京是受到怎样的接待,他来复旦大学似乎没有被宣传,只是悄悄来,悄悄离开,但是当年参加接待的贾植芳教授的日记里记载了这段历史,不妨引用一下:
Mr. Xia Zhiqing’s only visit to mainland China in his later years was in the spring and summer of 1983. At the invitation of Mr. Qian Zhongshi, he visited the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and went back to Shanghai to visit Fudan University. It was not like that one was invited by Fudan University, but because one of his relatives was Mr. Wang Jiguang from Fudan University’s Chinese Department. He visited his relatives and went to visit Fudan University. At that time, Mr. Xia’s “History of Modern Chinese Fiction” was published in Taiwan in the few years since its publication in the Chinese version. Many left-wing Chinese academics are furiously condemning and trying to boycott the government. It is hard for the government to accept in good faith this “anti-communist” Scholar. I do not know what kind of reception he received in Beijing. He did not seem to have been advertised in Fudan University. He just quietly came and quietly left. However, the history of Professor Jia Zhifang who attended the reception in his diary recorded this history.
