Objective To understand the etiological distribution of viral diarrhea in Tianjin. Methods The stool specimens from patients with infectious diarrhea were collected from Tianjin Children’s Hospital and Baodi Hospital from March to October in 2009. The rotavirus was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) ) Method was used to detect calicivirus and astrovirus, and the rotavirus ELISA positive specimens were typed. Adenovirus was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results A total of 124 children stool samples were collected from Children’s Hospital of Tianjin. The positive rates of the four viruses were: calicivirus (17.7%)> adenovirus (16.9%)> rotavirus (12.1%)> astrovirus 1.6%), the total detection rate was 48.4%. A total of 102 adult stool specimens were collected from Baodi Hospital. The positive rates of the four viruses were as follows: calicivirus (8.8%)> adenovirus (3.9%)> rotavirus (1.0%)> astrovirus , The total detection rate was 14.7%. 16 rotavirus G seropositive 8 strains, G1 was 5 (31.2%), G3 was 3 (18.8%), 8 strains failed to type (50%); P genotypes positive 7 , 2 strains (12.5%) for P [4], 1 strain (6.2%) for P [6], 4 strains (25%) for P [8] and 9 strains (56.3%). G1 was 1 (6.2%) for G and P combinations, 1 (6.2%) for P [8] G3 and 3 (18.8%) for P [8] G1. 31 strains of Norovirus are all G Ⅱ type. Adenoviruses are mainly Ad40 and Ad41 types. Astrovirus is type 1. Conclusion The incidence of viral diarrhea in children in this city was significantly higher than that of adults in this survey. The distribution of viruses showed a diversity.
