小麦是江淮丘陵地区仅决于水稻的主要作物。但是,单位面积产量不高,生产技术上存在許多問题。如何改进技术,力爭小麦增产,則是急需研究的一个重要課题。为此,作者选择代表一般生产水平的肥东县三十头公社东袁大郢生产队进行了調查。东袁大郢生产队共有耕地三百二十七亩,其中除一百二十亩純水田一年栽一季水稻,冬春蓄水沤田外;有一百二十亩水旱田,土質是黄白土、白土、澄白土等,年年稻麦輪作;还有八十七亩旱地,都是黄泥土,絕大部份一年只插一季山芋,少数午秋两熟,
