救济荒豇豆是怀宁县农家品种,1957年經安徽省农业厅征集,交我所进行試驗。經几年試驗証明,它是一个优良品种。这个品种株高五十厘米左右,直立不拖藤;每株有三至四个分枝,叶片长椭园形,頂部較尖;花紫白色,花梗着生在各分枝的基部,长二十三至二十六厘米,超出植株自由高度,因而結莢集中,且莢果露在外面,有利于摘莢收获;每花梗着生莢果二至六个,莢长十至十二厘米,成熟后黄白色,較易裂莢;每莢有种子十至十二粒,籽粒米黃色,豆臍边緣綠褐色中部白色,籽粒比一般豇豆小,千粒重一百一十一点七克;这个品种虽能耐旱,但遇过旱,結莢也要減少。救济荒豇豆适应性較强,肥田瘦地均可种植。特别是生育期短,出苗至收获只需两个多月,比綠豆还要早熟高产,几年平均亩产一百五十三点五
