茂汶县处岷江上游干热河谷腹心地带,除东部4个乡属涪江水系外,其余均属岷江水系,岷江自北向南贯穿全境。林业用地占全县土地面积的67.28％,有林地面积占27.28％。全县干旱河谷面积约100万亩。该地旱、涝、风、雹、洪水、滑坡、泥石流等灾害频繁,不仅威胁岷江上游,而且也威胁成都平原。因此,营造好本区的森林,对本县及川西平原的经济建设,均有重要意义。
