[Nuclear Weekly, Nov. 3, 1994] A senior official of the US Department of Energy (DOE) clearly reiterated last week that DOE agreed to assume the obligation of final disposal of commercial low-level waste (LLW) (also known as mixed waste). . Another DOE official said that Thomas Grumbly, Assistant Minister of Environmental Management, has set the date for the DOE to receive commercial mixed waste under the Federal Facility Implementation Act of 1992 (FFCA). FFCA requires DOEs to identify and develop plans for dealing with federal mixed waste. If the DOE departs from the plan, it may be subject to severe penalties. The bill does not mention mixed waste
