限制因子本是生态学上的概念,利比希(Liebig,J)在研究各种化学物质对植物的影响时发现,当一株植物所需要的营养物质降低到该种植物最小需要量以下的时候,这种营养物质就会限制植物的生长,这就是李比希最小量定律。后来泰勒(Taylor)、奥登(Odum)以及赖特(Knight)等人先后发展了限制因子概念,提出了当生态因素缺乏时、或在低于临界线、或超过最大忍受度的情况下,就会起限制因子的作用。,限制因子概念的主要价值是使生态学家掌握了一把研究生物与环境复杂关系的钥匙,生态学家一旦找到了限制因子,就意味着找到了影响生物存在和发展的关键性因子。其实,限制因子定律对英语课堂教学也有一定的启示。
