William Faulkner, a famous American writer, made a bold experiment on sentences in his masterpiece Sound and Fury. The most prominent one is the extensive use of long sentences. This paper analyzes the characteristics and functions of long sentences in The Sound and the Fury. It is believed that Faulkner’s long-term use of long sentences is intended to express as much content as possible in one sentence to bring it to a state of saturation, A kind of continuity and fluidity of the Guan Yue effect. These long sentences are also a concrete manifestation of Faulkner’s view that there are inextricably links between all things in the world. This paper argues that the long sentence trait in Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury is not, as some critics think, because he is not well educated, but rather the result of his devoted, painstaking design of artistic innovation.
