The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Argonne Laboratory has succeeded in finding a simple, new process for extracting Co and Mn from medium and low grade ores. The method can be used to extract Co and Mn economically and effectively from seafloor ores. The key to the process is the use of a molten salt that is capable of leaching more than 90% of Co and Mn contained in low-grade ores and then being obtained from molten salt at a low voltage of 1 to 1.5 volts Metal Co and Mn.
