Since the 1960s, the area of the Aral Sea, once the fourth largest lake in the world, has been reduced from 69,000 km 2 to about 30,000 km 2. Aral sea volume has been reduced by 3/4. This catastrophe was caused by the Soviet era’s decision to divert the two great rivers (Amu and Syria) flowing into the Aral Sea to irrigate poor lands and increase cotton production in the area. At present, the annual river inflow into the Aral Sea has been reduced from about 60km ~ 3 in the 1960s to 5km ~ 3. Scientists say that it takes 35km ~ 3 rivers a year to stop the floods across Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
