王鼎,字定九,号省崖,清乾隆三十三年(公元1768年)出生于陕西省蒲城县城内的一个穷苦的读书人家。嘉庆元年(公元1796年)进士,历任翰林院庶吉士、编修、侍讲学士、侍读学士,礼、户、吏、工、刑等五部侍郎,户部尚书,河南巡抚,直隶总督,军机大臣和东阁大学士等职。他为官一身正气,清正廉洁,爱民惜才,素有“端方正直”的美名,是我国近代史上一位杰出的政治家。
