《贝壳》的篇幅非常短小,只有两千来字,主人公是两个非常开通的都市女孩——未婚先孕却仍不想结婚的姐姐,以及在国外留学期间嫁给老外的妹妹。看得出来,这两个女孩对生活都不满意甚至感到厌倦,于是心血来潮地决定通宵开车前往父亲曾居住过的海边小镇。翌日清晨,在小镇旁的海滨沙滩上,妹妹拣到一片小小的贝壳,一片并不漂亮的贝壳,于是忆起了父亲曾对她们说过的一段话语:“每片贝壳在某个处所肯定会有一片和它正好相配的另一半,因为它们活着的时候是一直在一起的啊。”其实,这篇新近问世的小说与作者此前发表的一系列作品一样,表现出了都市青年对现代文明的迷惘和疲倦。在小说的结尾部分,作者借“父亲”的话为她的主人公开出了一个药方——返朴归真,去伊甸园寻找属于自己的另一部分。本小辑介绍的《贝壳》译自《秋冬》(2000—2001)。
