In 1984, China and Britain signed a joint statement on the issue of Hong Kong, confirming that the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on July 1, 1997. The population of Hong Kong now stands at 6.1 million with a per capita gross national product of 23,000 U.S. dollars. Then What about its social security? Strictly speaking, Hong Kong has no social security and only social welfare with social assistance. Funding comes from government budgets, and individuals and businesses do not pay any premiums.
