水力管道输送矿物是近三十年来日益发展的新技术。用长距离管道输送石油或天然气,早已为世界各国采用;而用于输送固体矿物也越来越广泛,管路总长达数十万公里,运距已从几公里发展到数百公里,单条管道年运量可达一千多万吨。早期仅用于输送煤,现已发展到输送石灰石、磷矿、钾盐、熔炼硫、硫精矿、硬沥青、铜与铁精矿等。 水力管道输送矿物原料发展如此迅速而广泛,主要原因是工艺简单、技术可行、经济效益显著。据国外文献报道,当年运输量为200~1200万吨时,各种运输方式的成本比较见表1:
