After infection of human erythrocytes with Plasmodium falciparum, its morphology, function and surface antigenicity may change, and parasite-induced erythrocyte surface antigen (PIESA) may appear. The authors cultured erythrocytes from 10 acute falciparum malaria children in a culture of RPMI1640-Hepes to obtain isolates. The parasite-infecting cell-agglutination test (PICA) and the black Tumor cell binding (MCB) inhibition assay to determine the diversity of PIESA. The results showed that homologous convalescent sera produced PICA responses, eight of which were +++, while only 21 of 81 heterologous sera were positive. 1905 strains and 9 other differences
