范文澜先生有一副名联:“板凳要坐十年冷,文章不写一句空”。这是范先生对好说空话、大话的人下的针砭。要不说空话、大话,只有坐冷板凳埋头苦读下“顽铁磨针”的功夫,现在的人已不大能办到了。最近读北京图书馆出版的《文献》(1989年第4期),其十周年建刊感言都是国内国外各大学教授写的。我读后感到宏论高见接踵而出,有的直如我胸中所欲言,有的深合愚意而我此时还未能表达出。于是我便摘取五位教授的感言,作为我个人的感言,这样做,未免太僣越了,好在心同理同,人我一揆,我想执笔诸公能予以原谅的。下面就直抄原文,有的为省文而删节:
Mr. Fan Wenlan has a couplet: “Bench to sit ten years cold, the article does not write an empty sentence.” This is Mr Fan’s sting on people who are foolish and talkative. To speak empty words, talk, only sit cold-headed hard to read under the “stubborn iron grinder” effort, and now people are not able to do. Recently read the Beijing Library published “literature” (1989 the fourth period), the tenth anniversary of the publication of the comments are written by professors at home and abroad to write. After reading, I felt the metamorphosis came one after another, and some as straightforward as my own chest, some deep-seated fools and I still can not express at this time. Therefore, I took the speeches of the five professors. As my personal testimony, I was too fickle to do so. The following is a direct copy of the original, and some provinces and abridged section:
