牛膝在文献上常写为一个科屬認为是“莧科,多年生草本”,但实际上川牛膝与怀牛膝是大有区别;此外,尾膝(杜牛膝),在很多地方銷售上冠以“川牛膝”名称,与川牛膝混淆不分,似宜料正。(一)怀牛膝①产地:主产于河南武陟县(旧怀庆府屬)、沁河以南、黄河以北的大司馬与木欒店附近肫浣尤赖臏叵亍⒉┌溆兄种?数量極微;河北安国、以往亦曾引种栽培,但产品較“潭怀~*货”为遜。②採制:本品主要是人工种植,于农历3月下种(即清明后与棉花种时相同),10月起土,在7、8月间为生長最盛期,所謂“三种七苗八条十冬收”,就是在3月下种后,7月间地上枝叶很茂盛,8月里地下根莖(俗称条)長度最速。有深至3尺者。立冬后起土、須挖刨3、4尺深,如遇有天气上冻早,亦有来春2月出土的。确是当年生植物,与文献上記載多年生显然不同。莖高l—3尺,叶形似紫苏,对生,結籽狀似紅蘿蔔籽,适宜于有沙質的土壤成長。多施肥料,其根莖長而且肥壯,出土后去净地上
