Marine science is a prominent issue at the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (NUCLOS) and at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992. UNCED laid the foundation for a new type of global partnership aimed at achieving sustainable development. The major agreement reached at the Rio Earth Summit provides a vision of how to move toward a more sustainable and more equitable global community. The cost of implementing the estimated 2,500 operations in Rio de Janeiro is estimated at $ 125 billion a year, in the form of industrialized country assistance. This figure is now twice the amount of official development assistance from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
