According to Pediatrics (1993, 91: 893), a three-year study of 485 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases and 1,800 control infants shows that there is a causal link between passive smoking and SIDS in infants. The survey included 78% of live births throughout New Zealand during 1987-90. During this period there were 716 infants who died after the neonatal period, of which 485 cases were diagnosed as SIDS (97% had an autopsy). The study’s concluding report (1991, 1992) states that maternal smoking is a risk factor for SIDS. Researchers further investigated the link between father smoking and SIDS. Univariate analysis of the relative risk of SIDS showed that the risk of developing SIDS in mothers with smoking during pregnancy was four times higher than that of non-smoking mothers, and Odds ratio (OR) was related to daily smoking intake. 1 to 19 cigarettes on a daily basis, OR was 3.87, 5.72 for more than 5.72. Passive smoking of babies after birth is also an important risk factor
