On May 6, 1889, the grand opening of the Paris Exposition at the 100th Anniversary of the French Revolution (1789-1799) marked a great sensation in the presence of an iron tower over 300 meters away. A large group of people stepped up the 1710 steps of the tower and only 20 reached the top of the tower. One of them raised a French flag at the top of the tower. In the roar of salute, this man proudly declared: “The French flag is now flying on the tallest building built by mankind.” When he returned to the ground, the French president awarded him the Legion of Honor. A writer later recalled: “When the scaffolding was removed, the flag was flying on the top of the tower, the flower beds were full of flowers and the sparkling water sprays from the fountain. The Parisian feeling was: the reality surpassed the dream!”
