嘉莉妹妹在传统意义上总被认为是道德沦落者。她从不掩饰的虚荣以及成为情妇、与情人私奔等等的行为都曾受到多方批判。但在当时物质主义盛行的美国,嘉莉作为来自社会底层少女,她的种种行为都有其独特的动机。嘉莉妹妹最终获得耀眼的成就,成为百老汇的明星,与她为了满足自身欲望而不断追求有着重要关系。本文运用心理学的动机理论对嘉莉妹妹的行为进行动机分析,指出嘉莉欲望的动机来源和嘉莉迈向更高追求的必然性,从而对嘉莉妹妹的人性有着更深入的理解,肯定她作为一个女性意识不断觉醒的形象的欲望。
Sister Carrie is always considered a moral loser in the traditional sense. She has never been concealed vanity and act as mistresses, elope with lovers and so on have been subject to multi-criticism. But in the United States where materialism prevailed at the time, Carrie, as a girl from the bottom of society, had her unique motives. Sister Carrie finally won the dazzling achievements of a Broadway star, and she in pursuit of their own desire to continue to have an important relationship. This paper analyzes the motivation of Sister Carrie using the motivation theory of psychology and points out the source of motivation of Carrie’s desire and the inevitability of Carrie’s pursuit of higher pursuit so as to have a deeper understanding of Sister Carrie’s human nature and affirm her Desire as an image of a constantly awakened female consciousness.
