1997年10月24日晚,位于上海体育场西侧的八运会主火炬与人们依依作别后熄灭,本世纪中国最后一次综合性竞技盛会宣告结束。主火炬整整燃烧了12个日日夜夜。如果从8月28日江泽民主席在北京亲手点燃算起,那么它的延续时间是57天。其旅程遍布各地,圣火的传递者达200万之众。 我们八运会采访组抵沪后,驻扎在上海体育场下的酒店里,印象不灭的,正是这盏圣火。每天凭窗望外,占据视线的就是迎面屹立着的熊熊火炬,别有一番感受。白天,它好像融化在上海秋天晴朗的空中;到了夜晚,一丈开外的火焰就会成为盛会心脏的跳动,热烈,有力,庄严——
