In the Warring States Period (476-221 BC), the Lord Wei of Qi was blinded by some of his ministers’ sweet words and refused to take advices that were good for him and his country. His Prime Minister Zou Ji came to persuade Lord Wei with his own experiences.
Zou Ji was a handsome man. One day, he asked his wife: “Xu Gong and I in the northern part of the city, who is more handsome?” His wife answered without hesitation. “Of course you are more handsome. How can Xu Gong compare with you in handsomeness?”
Then Zou Ji went to ask his concubine the same question. His concubine said: “Xu Gong is less handsome than you.”
Later, a friend came to beg Zou Ji for a favor. Zou Ji asked him the same question. The friend said smiling: “You are more handsome than Xu Gong.”
One day later, Xu Gong came to visit Zou Ji. Zou carefully compared himself with Xu Gong and found that Xu Gong was actually more handsome than him. Then he understood. “My wife said that I was more handsome because she loved me. My concubine said so because she feared me. My friend said so because he needed my help”.
Zou Ji used this story to tell Lord Wei of Qi that sweet words were not always true and that the lord should accept critical advice from others. Lord Wei of Qi agreed with Zou Ji and immediately published a notice about rewarding people who correctly pointed out the lord’s errors.
Soon after the issuance of the notice, a lot of people came to the courtyard of the palace, waiting to give their advice to Lord Wei. The courtyard was as crowded as a market.
