20世纪,林语堂对中国文化既进行了批判,也给予了肯定。林语堂对中国文化的态度,则经历了一个从全面批判到有条件肯定的过程,而林语堂对中国文化的肯定,不是从中国传统的角度来肯定中国文化的优点,而是从西方文化背景上向西方人展现中国文化的长处。尽管在批判与肯定中国文化中,林语堂的思想呈现出一定的复杂性,但对于我们今天进一步认识中国文化,仍然是有启示性的。这也正是林语堂批判与肯定中国文化的观点的现实价值之所在。
In the 20th century, Lin Yutang criticized Chinese culture and also affirmed it. Lin Yutang’s attitude towards Chinese culture has gone through a process of general criticism and conditional affirmation. Lin’s recognition of Chinese culture does not affirm the merits of Chinese culture from the perspective of Chinese tradition, but from the perspective of Western culture Westerners demonstrate the strengths of Chinese culture. Although Lin Yutang’s thinking presents some complexity in criticizing and affirming Chinese culture, it is still enlightenment for us to further understand Chinese culture today. This is exactly the real value of Lin Yutang’s criticism and affirmation of Chinese culture.
