The history of the Hungarian kingdom dates back to 896 CE. However, most of the archival documents produced before the 16th century were not preserved due to foreign rule in the 16th century. In 1756, Hungary opened the first archives and appointed the first Archivist in Hungarian history. This archival archives initially only kept archives of royal palaces and nobility. From the nineteenth century, it also kept the original legal documents, parliamentary documents and documents of judicial authorities. In 1867, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences proposed the establishment of a national archives, centralized archives of all central government agencies. In 1876, the National Archives was proclaimed.
