The repair of reinforced concrete bridge structures has become one of the major tasks in the restoration and maintenance of transportation infrastructure around the world.The causes of deterioration of bridge structues include the corrosion of reinforcing steel due to carbonation and chloride ingress,freez thaw damage deterioration and alkaline aggregate reactivity.The paper briefly describes the mechanisms of reinforced concrete deterioration and floolwed by a description of materials and methods used in restoration of enforced concrete bridges.A holistic approach to both concrete deterioration and concrete repair is presented.Although several facets of bridge structure are suceptible to deterioration,the paper details mainly with the repair and protection of the bridge substructure.It describes the characteristics of cement based materials used in the repair and their specific application.Waterproofing and protection of repaired reinforced concrete structure are essential to provide a lasting repair.The paper describes the proporties of sealers and coatings used to protect the repaired bridge structure and ensure its long term durability.
