In 1958, the World Expo in Brussels released an experimental short film news Polanski immediately decided that he would compete and win. He showed the members of the organizing committee his entire plan. The general structure of the film has existed in his mind for a long time: a fable of absurdity. Two men came from the sea together carrying a huge wardrobe, not only very cumbersome but also absurd. This allows them wherever they are disgusted and excluded. Polanski’s initial set-up was to have both of them carry a grand piano, but feared that this might easily be interpreted as a symbol of a genius of art, not what he wanted to express. What he needs is precisely a seemingly totally uninteresting burden, but it has somehow neutrality
