Based on the theory that the imbalance of elastase and its inhibitory factor is the mechanism of emphysema, some scholars have carried out studies on the use of elastase to replicate animal models of emphysema. However, the process of reacting elastase with intrapulmonary elastin is complicated by a number of factors in the body.
