甘肃省民勤县宋和村地处民勤县薛百乡南端,由于历史原因,到二十世纪五十年代中期,村西近10公里的风沙线上光秃秃一片,原生植被几乎全部枯死,农田受到风沙侵袭,村民流离失所。1955年,19岁的石述柱在村党支部支持下,组建起一支青年治沙突击队,和乡亲们把一筐一筐的粘土搬到沙丘上,把一捆一捆的麦秸插到沙土中。拉开了宋和人向风沙进军的序幕。1963年起,石述柱担任宋和村党支部书记,连续36年带领宋和群众艰苦奋战,终于在风沙最为严重的村西头建起一条长9公里、宽2.5公里的绿色风墙,在被称为灌风口的杨红庄滩上种植白杨树1000亩,沙枣树500亩,梭梭、毛条、霸王等沙生植物5500亩,经济林1500亩,营造出一个林粮间作的万亩林场,使2400多亩弃耕地得以复耕,在风沙肆虐的不毛之地建成了一个新宋和。2002年石述柱做客中央电视台“焦点访谈”节目,他背后许多鲜为人知的事迹在全国传开。鲜花和奖牌是无私奉献的报偿。石述柱的事迹鼓舞着人们治理生态环境,建设美好家园。石述柱虽然已经66岁了,但他治理沙害的决心没有变。他说:“只要我还活着,宋和村的治沙队伍里,就有我石述柱。”
