Recent interest in exploring endogenous ligands for morphine receptors has focused on some of the naturally occurring peptides. We found that directly applying the naturally occurring dibutyryl derivative of cGMP (dibutyryl-cGMp) to the central nervous system counteracts nociceptive stimuli without causing sedation and respiratory depression without altering the level of alertness and motor ability.
