一九三六年九月十三日,红二方面军占领了成县县城。半个世纪过去了,贺老总当年在成县的许多爱民故事,至今还在当地群众中广为流传。当穷苦人看望他的时侯九月十七日,当地老乡张忠、王泰、何仲杰、姚升轩四人受城内几千老乡委托买了四只鸡、六十斤酒、一百斤米、一头猪去看望贺老总。贺老总从屋内走出来,和蔼地给张忠等让座。起初,张忠等很紧张,不敢坐。贺老总一边给他们讲革命的道理,一边不断让座,让他们吸烟、喝水,询问成县人民的生活情况,平易近人,和蔼可亲。他们四人就与贺老总攀谈起来,一谈就谈了近一个小时。临别时,贺老总把他们送到大门口,还不停地招手。贺老总不仅关心群众的疾苦,并能启发、诱导群众投身革命。他们四人,在贺老总精神的感召下,积极地为红军做了有益的工作。
