到目前为止,世界上大半斜拉桥都架设在欧洲。近年来美国也在开始注意发展斜拉桥。1972年开通的有阿拉斯加州(Alaska)锡特卡港(Sitka)的1号约翰奥康奈尔纪念桥(John O’Connel Memorial)。现在施工中的除有四座斜拉桥外,还有两座也正在施工。这两座桥中的一座是在美国西北部华盛顿州哥伦比亚河流域的主要城市帕斯科(Pasco)与肯涅威克(Kennewick)连接两市之间的斜拉桥。这座桥是代替1921年架设的桁架桥的新桥,是于1971年开始计划的。当时研究了钢桁桥、“德比达克”式的预应力混凝土桥、钢桁斜拉桥、预应力混凝土斜拉桥等方案。最后根据下述理由采用了预应力混凝土斜拉桥:
