Abstract Objective To compare the regular X-ray attenuation with the soft tissue components of female breast. To overcome this limitation, the diagnostic advantage was investigated by examining the exact tumor architecture in fresh breast specimens with darkfield mammography. Methods Three fresh mastectomy specimens containing at least two or more breast masses were examined using a graded, experimental Talbot-Lau interferometer using grating absorption, absolute phase, and dark field mammography. Preoperative imaging examinations (digital mammography, ultrasound, MRI), postoperative histopathological analysis, and in vitro digital mammography were performed on all breast specimens to verify the results.
