中国目前正在进行着迄今人类所经历的最不寻常的社会和经济实验。这种有计划的、旨在提高十亿多人民的社会、教育、科技和工业水平的努力在人类历史上,前所未有的。在中国,人们称这种努力为“新的长征”,去年,笔者曾沿着中国红军长征的路线旅行,亲身体会到,如果没有非凡的勇气、耐力和坚忍,长征是不会成功的。进行新的长征,必须具备第一次长征所赖以成功的那些品质。新的长征虽然没有饥寒交迫之苦,枪林弹雨之险。它所要求的是这样的民族品质——目的感、自我牺牲精神、置国家于个人之上、中华民族为之称著的聪明才智和为事业奋斗的精神。与此同时,它还要求创造力和独创精神,要求掌握新的技术,要求对老问题和伟人的学说采取新的态度。
China is currently carrying out the most unusual social and economic experiment that humanity has experienced so far. This planned effort aimed at raising the social, educational, scientific and technological levels of more than one billion people has never been done before in human history. In China, people call this hard work a “new long march.” Last year, I traveled along the route of the Long March of the Red Army in China. Realizing that the Long March would not have succeeded without extraordinary courage, endurance and perseverance. To carry out the new Long March must possess the qualities that first succeeded in the Long March. Although the new Long March does not suffer from hunger and cold, it is a danger of a bullet. What it requires is such a quality of nation - the sense of purpose, the spirit of self-sacrifice, the wisdom of the nation on the individual, the wisdom of the Chinese nation, and the spirit of striving for the cause. At the same time, it requires creativity and inventiveness, demands new skills and calls for a new approach to old and great theories.
